our story
Grandma Ruby's is a family-owned business with locations in Minnesota and Tennessee. The Carpenters, Harvey, Kari & Jacob live in Minnesota and the Junions, Dan, Marni, Liesl & Dylan live in Tennessee. Kari and Marni are sisters and, in case you're wondering, Grandma Ruby is a real person - she's our grandma.
When we decided to go into business together, we tossed around a lot of different names, but we chose to name our business after the person who had the most influence in our lives growing up together.
We live miles apart now but we reminisce often about the laughter and joy during our childhood with Grandma Ruby, whom we affectionately called Mamo, and she had the ability to touch everyone she came in contact with in a positive and meaningful way.
Raised during the Great Depression, Mamo knew how to make mundane foods and dessert into delectable meals that friends and neighbors would talk about for days. Of course, we kids liked the desserts best!
In 1991 she was struck with ALS (Lou Gerhig's disease), which eventually took her life. We were fortunate enough to be with Mamo in her final moments and our time together throughout the years created a lasting impression and special bond between us.
Since 1997, the Dan & Marni operated Rocky Top Country store with our parents. When they recently decided to retire, we all decided to expand Grandma Ruby's Sweet Shoppe and create a combined family business with a commercial candy kitchen in Minnesota and country store in Tennessee.
We are honored to share the inspiration of our beloved Grandma Ruby, recognizing that Grandmothers all over the world bring happiness and joy into the lives of those they touch.
